What is this?
“The Vine” is a new Wednesday evening program (10 week trial) designed to help people grow spiritually through praise, prayer and small group discussion. It’s “the place to go if you want to grow.”
What does the name mean?
It’s taken from Jesus’ words in John 15:5: “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
It starts on Wednesday, September 21 and runs every Wednesday evening until November 30th.
What will happen?
We’ll gather at 7 pm in the Fellowship Hall for a time of singing and prayer. Participants will then break out into small groups to have a 45-minute discussion based on the pastor’s message from the previous Sunday.
There will be trained small group leaders who will facilitate these discussions.
We will then rejoin each other at the end for a Q & A with the pastor, and end the night with some singing and prayer. It ends at 8:30pm.
Why are we doing this?
There is a real hunger to learn, pray and connect as Westminster grows. This is a massive step forward to help in this process.
Not only that, but with modern busy schedules it can be hard to connect with, and get to know, others. The Vine small group format will help us know each other better.
Plus, in today’s society where wanting to learn about Jesus and going to church isn’t always the popular thing to do, it can be really helpful to meet with others who want to encourage you in your journey.
What if I can’t come every Wednesday?
That’s okay. Come one time, some of the time, or all of the time. It can benefit you from being there every night; but if that doesn’t fit with your schedule, one-offs will still work.
You will be welcomed into a friendly group, and each night the small group leader will review the main point and Bible passage from the previous Sunday so that everyone is on the same page – even if you missed it.
Westminster isn’t really my church home. Can I still participate?
We expect that many of the participants will be a part of the Westminster community, but also that several people won’t be. That’s okay. Some may have no church home, and some may even worship at other churches on Sundays. That’s also okay. The Vine is “the place to go if you want to grow.”
I’m shy. Is this for me?
Some people really like to contribute to a discussion verbally, and that’s great. But some people hold back a bit more. That’s also totally acceptable. There is no pressure to talk. Sometimes we just need to be with other people and hear their perspectives as we think through things for ourselves.
How many people will there be in each group?
When we gather together at the start of the evening for singing and prayer, we’ll all be together in the Fellowship Hall. There will probably be between 30 and 40 of us to start. When we break out into smaller groups they will each have between 8 to 12 people.
Where will the small groups meet, and how will I know where to go?
When you first get to the church just go to the main Fellowship Hall. The words to the songs will be on a screen. We’ll sing and pray from 7 to 7:20pm. When it’s time to break into the small groups, you will be told which group you’re in and directed to a room where your small group leader will start the discussion. You’ll be directed where to go at the appropriate time. That part of the night happens from 7:20 to 8:05pm. Then, we end the evening all together for a Q and A with the pastor and some closing songs and prayers. We leave by 8:30pm.
How do I sign up?
